Forest
The Akfirat forested area represents the largest terrestrial ecosystem within the boundaries of Tuzla. Composed of oak, hornbeam, and various maquis species, this green area is located at the transition between the southern coastal plain and the northern Kocaeli plateau. You can see its limits on the Map. Protected against forest degradation in İstanbul, it is a refuge for wildlife.
Endemic herbaceous plants and shrubs growing on the forest floor increase the biological diversity of the area. The clayey and calcareous soil structure provides a suitable ground for these tree species to take root.
