Fried fresh especially during the afternoons around Tarrafal beach, Pastéis are a delicious testament to the local fishing heritage. Available across squares located on the Harita, these crispy treats are loved throughout Cabo Verde.
The addition of local malagueta chili peppers gives the tuna filling a pleasant kick.
Ingredients
- 300g wheat flour
- 150ml warm water
- 200g fresh tuna (cooked and flaked)
- 1 small onion
- 1 finely chopped hot chili pepper (Malagueta)
- Oil for deep frying
Preparation
- Knead the flour, water, and a pinch of salt into a smooth dough, then let it rest for 20 minutes.
- Sauté the finely chopped onion, chili, and flaked tuna in a pan to prepare the filling.
- Roll out the dough thinly and cut into circles; place a spoonful of filling in the center and fold into half-moons.
- Deep fry in hot oil for about 4-5 minutes until golden and crispy.
