Cuisine

Prepared by placing a whole fresh plum inside, these potato gnocchi are among the surprising flavors of Trieste cuisine. Originating from Austro-Hungarian traditions, it is served with melted butter, cinnamon, and toasted breadcrumbs. Rarely found elsewhere in Italia, this dish is authentically served in old taverns near the port area on the Harita.

Ingredients

  • 500g starchy potatoes
  • 150g flour and 1 egg
  • 10-12 fresh damson plums
  • 50g butter and 4 tablespoons of breadcrumbs
  • Granulated sugar and ground cinnamon

Preparation

  1. Boil and mash the potatoes, then mix with flour and egg to knead a soft dough.
  2. Remove the pits from the plums and replace them with a teaspoon of sugar and cinnamon mixture.
  3. Take pieces of dough and roll them around the plums to enclose them completely.
  4. Boil in salted water until the gnocchi surface, then roll them in butter-toasted breadcrumbs before serving.
