Historical Development of Maltepe

Maltepe, located on the Asian side of İstanbul, has been a strategic coastal settlement throughout history. Named Bryas during the Byzantine Empire, the region served as an important retreat and palace center for the emperors of the period. The most concrete remnant of this era is found within the Küçükyalı Archeopark (Bryas Palace), which is currently under protection.

During the Ottoman Empire, being a stopover point on the main campaign routes of Türkiye, commercial and social life shaped around the Maltepe Beşçeşmeler Square. The clean air and geography of the region maintained its importance during the Republican era as well, and the Historical Sureyyapasa Hospital Building built by Süreyya Pasha became one of the greatest symbols in the healthcare history of the district.
