Identity, location and daily life
Overview
Batman's most historically rich district, Hasankeyf, is one of the most significant points of cultural heritage in Türkiye and the world, with a history spanning thousands of years. This ancient settlement, brought to life by the Tigris River, possesses a unique landscape adorned by the Hasankeyf Canyon and the Hasankeyf Plateau. Daily life and traditional culinary culture in the region remain vibrant with local flavors like Hasankeyf Yogurt Soup and Hasankeyf Tandoor Bread baked in clay ovens.
Prominent Cultural and Geographical Structures
The Hasankeyf Archaeological Site, located in the heart of the district, sheds light on the rich past of the region with its thousands of caves and historical ruins. Towering over the river valley, the majestic Hasankeyf Castle and the architecturally elegant Zeynel Bey Tomb are monumental structures that must be seen in the district. Following the construction of the Ilısu Dam, some of these monuments were carefully relocated to the new settlement zone for preservation and are now exhibited around the Hasankeyf Museum.
