Identity, location and daily life
Overview
São Salvador do Mundo is a mountainous and agricultural city located in the interior of Santiago Island within Cabo Verde. The administrative and cultural heart of the region is shaped around the Achada Igreja Plateau, which is situated on a relatively flat terrain. The city leans against the slopes of the protected Pico de António Geographical Area, one of the highest points on the island. In this region, where daily life revolves around traditional agricultural activities, the prominent elements of local cuisine include the staple dish Cachupa and the traditional corn-based meal Xerém.
Geographical Structure and Natural Beauty
The geography of the region is characterized by deep valleys and steep hills. In particular, the Ribeira Seca Basin Stream Bed, which collects rainwater during the wet season, and the Faveta Valley Canyon, known for its sheer cliffs, are the most significant hydrological features of the city. The Faveta Reservoir Lake, vital for agricultural irrigation, creates a green oasis within this rugged landscape.
