Overview

Located in the northwest of Istanbul on the Black Sea coast, Arnavutköy is a district that stands out with both its vast natural areas and massive logistical investments. Becoming a global hub due to the Istanbul Airport, one of the largest projects in Türkiye located within its boundaries, the region also hosts unique natural beauties. The area surrounding Lake Terkos (Lake Durusu), one of the district's primary freshwater sources, holds great importance for nature trekking and local water culture.

Nature, Culture, and Local Life

Arnavutköy offers expansive green spaces like the Shamlar Forest for those wishing to escape the urban hustle of Istanbul. While its gateway to the Black Sea, the Karaburun Coast, is preferred for seaside tourism in summer, the region's culinary culture is also highly developed. In particular, Durusu Catfish Stew served around the lake and Hadımköy Dairy Yogurt, a product of local livestock activities, are essential local delicacies to taste. You can inspect the detailed geographical position of the district in the Harita section.

Located in the northwest of Istanbul, Arnavutköy has a unique cultural fabric where traditional coastal life blends with modern developments. The fish-centered lifestyle around Lake Terkos (Durusu Lake), a historical hub for freshwater fishing, and the shores of Karaburun Coast play a defining role in shaping the daily habits of the local community.

History

Historical Development of Arnavutköy

Located in the northwest of Istanbul, the largest metropolis in Türkiye, the Arnavutköy district possesses a deep-rooted history. The history of the region was shaped by its role as a vital center meeting the city's water needs during the Byzantine and Ottoman periods. In particular, the area surrounding Terkoz Gölü (Durusu Gölü) maintained its strategic importance for centuries.

Ottoman Period and Water Infrastructure

During the Ottoman Empire, the most critical facilities feeding the city's water network were constructed within these borders. The historic Terkos Pumping Station, which serves today as the Terkos Water Culture Museum, was built in the late 19th century and became the heart of the modern water system. On the Black Sea coast, the Karaburun Sahili played a critical commercial and military role with its historic lighthouse guiding ships entering the Bosphorus.

Modern Era and District Status

During the Republican era, the area consisted of villages under Çatalca and Gaziosmanpaşa for a long time, until it gained independent district status through administrative reorganization in 2008. Today, it has acquired a global vision by hosting the İstanbul Havalimanı project, one of the world's largest transportation hubs. To examine the exact geographic boundaries of the area, you can refer to the Harita section.
