Story and significance

About

Built in 1271 by the Ilkhanid Vizier Shams al-Din Juwayni in the center of Sivas, the Double Minaret Medrese is known for its massive portal. It features one of the most magnificent Seljuk facade designs in Türkiye.

Timeline, heritage and stories

Heritage

Only the monumental portal on the east facade and its two minarets have survived to the present day from the Double Minaret Medrese, one of the most striking structures in the city square of Sivas. This rare piece of Türkiye cultural heritage represents one of the peaks of stone carving art.

Archaeological studies have been carried out in the destroyed inner parts of the madrasa, and the remaining massive facade is protected. To see its exact location in the city square, you can look at the Harita section on the page.
