Timeline, heritage and stories
Located in southern Italia, the city of Vibo Valentia boasts a profound historical legacy dating back to antiquity. Its origins lie in the ancient Greek colony of Hipponion, a period still testified today by the impressive Ancient Walls of Hipponion. Under Roman rule, the settlement was renamed 'Valentia' and developed into a crucial commercial and military stronghold in the region.
During the Middle Ages, the city underwent significant transformations. The dominant Vibo Valentia Castle, also known as the Norman-Swabian Castle of Vibo Valentia, was erected to secure the territory. Today, this historical fortress houses the renowned Vito Capialbi State Archaeological Museum. The spiritual and cultural development of the city is beautifully represented by religious landmarks such as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore and San Leoluca.
