Timeline, heritage and stories

Heritage

A Place of Remembrance for Resistance and Pain

Established during the Salazar dictatorship, this camp was used to imprison anti-fascist dissidents and African independence fighters. Today, it is the most significant heritage site within Tarrafal. Visitors can explore the barracks and high walls to witness the remnants of the colonial past. Check the Map section for its exact location.

Inside the complex, an exhibition dedicated to the harsh life conditions of prisoners functions as a museum. This memorial site is the most concrete symbol of liberation in Cabo Verde.
