About

Situated in Rhineland-Palatinate, Laacher See is a large volcanic caldera lake. It represents one of the rare active volcanic signs in Deutschland.

Terrain, waters and landscape

Waters

The lake was formed when a caldera, collapsed due to a massive eruption around 13,000 years ago, filled with water. You can find the exact position of the lake via the Map.

On the southeastern shores of the lake, carbon dioxide bubbles (mofettes) rising from the water can still be observed. The surrounding area is popular for hiking and outdoor recreation.
