Timeline, heritage and stories
Fortaleza Real de São Filipe is a majestic 16th-century military structure built to protect Cidade Velha. It stands as a prime example of defensive architecture in the Sotavento Islands. Perched on a hill 120 meters above sea level, it reflects the colonial military power of Cabo Verde. Visitors can enjoy panoramic ocean views from the battlements and locate it via the Map.
The fort was commissioned by the Portuguese crown following devastating raids by privateers, including Sir Francis Drake. Today, its fully restored quarters and old cannon batteries are open to the public.
