Timeline, heritage and stories

History

Vercelli has been one of the most important residential centers of Northern Italia since the Ancient Roman period. The historical core of the city was established at a strategic point on the Vercelli Plain and developed thanks to the abundance of water resources. Standing out as an independent commune during the Middle Ages, the city witnessed the construction of the Basilica of Sant'Andrea, the most significant religious and architectural structure in the region. The Archaeological Site of Sant'Andrea, which developed around this magnificent building, hosts numerous ruins shedding light on the deep-rooted past of the city.

Having witnessed military and economic struggles for centuries, the city reached its peak agricultural transformation with the Cavour Canal project. Important documents from the city's defense and administrative history, along with ancient artifacts, are exhibited today within the Leone Museum. The Vercelli Cathedral, considered the spiritual heart of the city, is the most tangible witness of the architectural and cultural transformation the city underwent through the centuries. To examine the historical streets of the city and the locations of these monuments, you can view the Harita section.
