Timeline, heritage and stories
Terni was founded in ancient times under the name Interamna Nahars. The city held a highly strategic position within the fertile Terni Basin and along the banks of the vital Nera River. During the Roman era, its location on the Via Flaminia, one of the most crucial transport routes in Italia, triggered rapid growth, developing in close commercial and military connection with the nearby Carsulae Archaeological Site.
During the Middle Ages and the modern era, the efficient utilization of water power shaped the destiny of the city. Engineered in 271 BC by the Roman Consul Curius Dentatus by diverting the Velino Stream, the spectacular Marmore Falls (also known as Cascata delle Marmore) stands as a monument to regional water management. The city is also a global center for religious history; the prominent Basilica of San Valentino, where Saint Valentine served as bishop and was buried, remains the most precious historical heritage of the city's spiritual identity.
