History
Boasting a rich past on the Italia peninsula, Teramo was originally founded as the capital of the ancient Praetutii tribe. During the Roman Empire, it flourished under the name Interamna Praetutiorum. One of the most significant monuments surviving from this golden era is the Roman Theatre of Teramo, located right in the urban core. The ancient settlement's water needs and typography were shaped by the fertile lands nestled between the Tordino River and the Vezzola River.
During the Middle Ages, the city maintained its strategic importance, becoming a powerful bishopric seat and undergoing architectural renewal. Erected in the 12th century, the iconic Teramo Cathedral stands as a magnificent blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles. Another focal point of spiritual life through the centuries has been the Sanctuary of Madonna delle Grazie. The city's early defense structures and town planning heavily relied on the naturally protected Castello Hill Plateau.
The millennia-old chronology and priceless archaeological findings of the city are meticulously preserved in the Francesco Savini Archaeological Museum. To better trace the military, social, and cultural evolution of the settlement, visitors can consult the Harita section. In this land where nature and history intertwine, the legacy of the past remains vibrant from riverbeds to ancient stone walls.
