History

As one of the well-established settlements in northern Italia, the city of Sondrio developed at a strategic point in the Alps. The most significant turning point in the city's defensive and administrative history revolves around Masegra Castle, which rises above the settlement. During the Middle Ages, the town served as a military stronghold to control trade routes running through the Valtellina Plain (Sondrio Section).

In the Renaissance and subsequent eras, Sondrio strengthened its cultural identity, with the Collegiate Church of Santi Gervasio e Protasio becoming the heart of community life. Managing the fierce currents of the Mallero Stream required continuous urban engineering along the riverbanks. The rich artistic and political heritage of these centuries is preserved today inside the Valtellina Museum of History and Art. You can consult the local topography in the Map section.
