Founded in 764, Lorsch Abbey stood as one of the preeminent religious and cultural powerhouses of the early Middle Ages in Hessen. The famous Gatehouse or 'King's Hall' (Königshalle) is one of the very few Carolingian monuments intact today. It remains one of the earliest designated UNESCO sites in Deutschland.
