Timeline, heritage and stories

Heritage

The Historic Presidio Square is considered the heart of the urban heritage in São Filipe. It is surrounded by grand aristocratic houses (sobrados) built during the Portuguese colonial period, now beautifully painted in vibrant colors. The square holds immense historical value as it was once the site for administrative and military ceremonies across Cabo Verde.

The terrace situated at the lower section of the square directly overlooks the famous black sand beach, Praia da Bila, and the vast Atlantic Ocean. A staple stop for any walking tour, this protected historic site highlights the island's unique history.
