Timeline, heritage and stories
The Danevirke is a massive system of earthen ramparts that protected the border between Scandinavia and the European continent during the Viking Age. Built across the strategic bottleneck of Schleswig-Holstein, it directly correlates with the nearby ancient port of Hedeby. Track its long trail on the Map.
Hedeby was one of the wealthiest Nordic trading metropolises of its era, now preserved via reconstructed Viking houses and a modern museum complex. This heritage is the most concrete evidence of Viking history in Deutschland.
