Timeline, heritage and stories

History

Istanbul's prominent settlement, Bahçelievler, historically served as an agricultural, viticultural, and military camping zone during the Byzantine and Ottoman eras. One of the oldest known historical structures in the district, the Çobançeşme Bridge, was constructed during the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) period, highlighting the strategic position of the area on ancient transport networks. The Ayamama Stream Basin (Bahçelievler Border) and its surroundings became a hub for agricultural activities early on due to the abundance of water resources.

The Ottoman Era and Summer Resort Culture

During the Ottoman Empire, the fertile lands and water sources of the region attracted the attention of the palace elite. Built in the 16th century and considered the most significant historical symbol of the district today, the Siyavuşpaşa Pavilion reflects the architectural grandeur of its time. This pavilion and its surroundings served as a recreational and hunting ground for high-ranking Ottoman officials. Farms established along the lines of the Tavukçu Stream evolved into crucial agricultural areas meeting the vegetable, fruit, and milk demands of the capital.

Republican Era and Modernization

With the declaration of the Republic, Bahçelievler took its share from the modernization movements across Türkiye. The settlement, which concentrated around the Bahçelievler Yayla Region (Plateau), underwent a planned urban transformation with the 'houses with gardens' project starting from the mid-20th century. Industrial raw materials around the old Kocasinan Quarries Natural Pond Area and Kocasinan Riverbed Valley were utilized in the construction of the region. The historical transformation of the district can be examined via the Map.
