Identity, location and daily life
Overview
Göle, one of the largest districts of Ardahan province, is a unique settlement in Türkiye known for its high, forested plateaus. The district is shaped around the vast and fertile Göle Plain and the Kura River (Göle Basin), which is the life source of the region. Located on a high-altitude plateau ecosystem, the Göle Forests surrounded by rich vegetation and the Uğurtaşı Plateau are among the prominent natural areas. Cattle breeding forms the basis of daily life and the local economy, resulting in the production of the geographically registered Göle Kashar Cheese.
Natural and Historical Richness
Karakale Mountain, rising within the district borders, and the Köroğlu Stream fed by these mountains offer suitable routes for nature trekking. The Kura Valley Canyon (Göle Section), one of the deep valleys of the region, and the Onyedi Lakes, hidden corners of nature, hold significant potential for ecotourism. In terms of cultural heritage, the ancient Göle Kalecik Castle, the historical Dedeşen Village Mosque and Historical Ruins, and the Uğurtaşı Village Church Ruins, which evidence the multicultural past of the area, can be explored. The Göle Pine Grove Recreation Area, drawing attention with its proximity to the district center, serves as a popular social resting spot.
Culture and Culinary Values
Göle cuisine consists of nutritious, pastry-heavy flavors adapted to harsh climate conditions. Feselli prepared with traditional methods, the famous Göle Kete with its unique filling, and another local pastry Göle Hünkiri complete the culinary culture of the district.
